In this learn Spanish grammar lesson, we go over Spanish demonstrative pronouns and Spanish demonstrative adjectives, both which are identical in Spanish except that Spanish demonstrative pronouns take an accent.
Demonstrative Pronouns in Spanish
A demonstrative pronoun points to and identifies a noun or a pronoun. "This" and "these" refer to things that are nearby either in space or in time, while "that" and "those" refer to things that are farther away in space or time. Let's take a look at a few examples of Spanish demonstrative pronouns used in sentences:
Esta casa es mía, pero ésa es tuya.
This house is mine, but that one is yours.
La mejor cerveza es ésta.
The best beer is this one.
The Spanish Demonstrative Pronoun Neuter:
The Spanish demonstrative pronoun nueter that you see above is reserved for when you are referring to something non-specific or when you simply don't know or can't know the name of the referrant. For example, "That's true!" is considered something non-specific, whereas, "What is this?" is something that isn't known. Let's look at some examples in Spanish:
¡Esto es fantastico! (This is fantastic!)
¿Qué es eso? (What is that?)
Demonstrative Adjectives in Spanish
A demonstrative adjective (this, that, these, those) show whether the noun they refer to is either singular or plural and whether it is located near to or far from the speaker or writer. As stated above, demonstrative adjectives in Spanish are identical to demonstrative pronouns in Spanish except they don't carry an accent.
