Learn Spanish: The Future Tense in Spanish

This learn Spanish grammar lesson in on the Spanish future tense - when to use it and how Spanish verbs are conjugated in the future tense.

In Spanish, the future tense is used to express what will occur or will not ocurr.

Llegaré a las 8:00 de la noche. I will arrive at 8:00 pm.
Mi avión no saldrá a horario. My airplane will not take off on time.

In Spanish, as in English, the future tense is used to express the result of an hypothetical situation.

Si el autobús no llega, tomaremos un taxi. If the bus doesn’t arrive, we will take a taxi.

In Spanish, the future tense is also used to wonder or to express probability.

Quién será? I wonder who it could be?
¿Será tu mama? Could it be your mother?
¿Qué hora será? I wonder what time it is?
Serán las ocho. It’s probably eight o’clock.

There are tree ways to express the future in Spanish

1.Using present tense:

Te llamo mañana.

I will call you tomorrow.

2. Using the expression: Ir + a + infinitive

Vamos a bailar el sábado

We are going to dance on Saturday.

3. Using future tense

Viajaré a Europa en mes próximo

I will go to Europe next month.

Hay in the Future Tense

Hay means there is or there are; this is the present tense. In the Spanish future tense, hay becomes habrá, which means there will be.

Habrá tres estudiantes esperando.
There will be three students waiting.
