Learn Spanish: Conjugating The Spanish Verb Ir (to go)

In this learn Spanish grammar lesson, we go over the Spanish verb "Ir," which means to go. In Spanish, to make a plan or to say where you are going we use the verb Ir + a + (the place).

Conjugating the Present Tense of Ir:

Ustedes

Ellos/Ellas van They go

Use the verb ir + a + (a place):

1) To say where you are going.

Voy a la cafetería I am going to the cafeteria
Hoy vamos al cine. Today we are going to the movies.

2) To ask someone where they are going.

¿Tú vas a la biblioteca cada día? Do you go to the library every day?

3) To make invitations or suggest activieties.

Vamos al restaurante . Let’s go to a restaurant.

Expressing Future Plans

To ask or to express future plans or intentions, use ir + a + infinitive.

¿Qué vas a hacer el Sábado? What are you going to do on Saturday?
Voy a bailar con mis amigos. I am going to dance with my friends .

To ask where someone is going or what somebody is going to do, add a before the infinitive. Note that when you list a number of activities, you need the a before each infinitive verb.

¿Adónde vas? Where are are you going?
Voy al parque a caminar y a descansar.

I am going to the park to walk and to rest.
