Learn Spanish: The Past Perfect Tense in Spanish
This learn Spanish grammar lesson is on the Spanish past perfect tense. In the previous learn Spanish grammar lesson, we dicussed the present perfect tense in Spanish. The past perfect tense is often used when relating two events which happened in the past. In Spanish, as in English, the past perfect tense express an action, state or event that was already completed before the start of another past action, state or event.
The past perfect tense in Spanish is formed by using the imperfect tense of the auxiliary verb Haber with the past participle of the verb that expresses the action or state.
Forming the Past Perfect Tense in Spanish:
Present tense of haber + past participle

The present perfect is used to describe past events or actions that have been going on up to the present.
Some words like: esta semana, este mes/año, este verano/ invierno, este fin de semana will take the present perfect tense.
| He escrito mucho este fin de semana. |
I have written a lot this weekend |
| No he dormido muy bien estos últimos días. |
I haven’t slept very well these last days. |
| Qué han hecho este verano? Nosotros hemos visitado a nuestros abuelos |
What have you done this summer? We have visited our grandparents. |
